CONTROLLED BURNING

This is a "control-burn," also called a "hazard reduction burn." Fire is a natural part of a pine forest's ecology. Burning releases nutrients tied-up in grasses and undesirable vegetation to the trees. A pine forest needs this to stay healthy. Without a fire, a pine forest is overtaken by hardwoods, and valuable growth and nutrients wasted.
